How to spend a day exploring Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Luxembourg City is the capital of Luxembourg, a relatively small country in Europe – sitting at 28th smallest in the world. This lesser-known European gem is encompassed by Germany, France and Belgium. Despite its size, it is full of fairytale-like charm offering plenty of sights to see during your day exploring Luxembourg City.
After spending a week in Paris, Luxembourg City came as a nice change of pace. Luxembourg City is relaxed, easy to getting around by foot, completely charming and has many fewer tourists occupying its streets. Here’s how I spent the day exploring the quaint capital city of Luxembourg:
Grund
Grund is a historic quarter in Luxembourg City. It sits in the valley on the banks of the Alzette River and its streets are clustered with pastel coloured buildings and grey rooftops.
Casemates du Bock
I didn’t have a clue what Casemates du Bock was until I arrived in Luxembourg City and stumbled across its castle-like architecture, which prompted me to do my research.
The UNESCO world heritage listed Casemates du Bock are a historic network of tunnels and stairways dating back over a thousand years, some of which are accessible for the public. For opening times and seasonal closures, you can look on Luxembourg City’s tourism site.
Notre-Dame Cathedral
When in Europe, I rarely walk past a Cathedral without taking a peep inside. I am always in awe of the exquisite interiors, which are usually full of fine details, carved columns and painted ceiling. I have to say my absolute favourite detail of European Cathedrals is seeing the stunning stained glass windows illuminated by the sun.
City Skyliner
If you love views as much as I do, the City Skyliner is not to be missed. The Skyliner is a viewing platform that elevates into the sky on a rotating mechanism. As the observation pod rises 81 metres high, it slowly rotates providing 360-degree views over the entire city.
Please be aware that the Skyliner is only open for a short period of time during the summer months so be sure to check availabilities before adding this to your list.
Monument of Remembrance
The “Golden Lady” is located right by the City Skyliner in the heart of the city and is a monument of remembrance dedicated to fallen soldiers and victims of war.
